The Hobbit (Films) are based upon J.R.R.Tolkien's The Hobbit, and it will be directed by Peter Jackson (who also directed The Lord of the Rings). It will feature Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin, Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, Andy Serkis as Gollum, Sir Christopher Lee as Saruman the White and many others.
The films are set for release on 14th December 2012 and 13th December 2013, they are currently undergoing filming in New Zealand and Pinewood Studios in London. Part 1 will have the title An Unexpected Journey and Part 2 will have the title There and Back Again. Upon release there will be an Extended Edition, and a complete Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Box-Set.
