Gandalf the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White, was an Istari. Istari were Maiar that were chosen by the Valar to help the peoples of Middle-earth in their fight against the Dark Lord Sauron. The Istari (Men called them Wizards) took the form of Men, but possessed far greater physical and mental power. Gandalf walked among the peoples of Middle-earth for over 2000 years, helping them against the powers of evil.
